B.Sc Perfusion Technology at Rajarajeswari Medical College
One of the most significant medical technology advancements of the last 50 years is the development of the Heart–Lung Machine. This life-saving device is designed to maintain the body in a living state when the heart and lungs are temporarily unable to function. It performs the vital processes of removing carbon dioxide from the blood and supplying oxygen, allowing surgeons to safely carry out complex cardiac procedures.
A Perfusionist is a highly skilled allied health professional who plays a critical role in open-heart surgery. Specially trained and educated as a core member of the cardiac surgical team, the perfusionist is responsible for the selection, preparation, operation, and monitoring of the Heart–Lung Machine and other advanced life-support systems throughout the surgical procedure.
